Description
Mukashi Mukashi has an artistic sensibility that goes beyond simple “out of the box” luxury. Unique materials, textures and art pieces evoke a different sensibility in each room of the house. Textured concrete, quick rust metal, and dark polished wood elements make up the facade of the building while decorative elements spice up the functional, geometric lines inside. Materials used include woven bamboo, industrial concrete and steel, treated wood, richly textured stone tiles and metal panels – all coming together to add unique grace to every aspect of the building.

“Mukashi Mukashi” translates to ‘once upon a time’ – a fitting name for this fairytale in design and artistic expression (dive deeper into the chalet’s design and development process in Powderlife’s Architecture feature). At Mukashi Mukashi’s heart is a gas fireplace: encased in glass on both sides, it creates a window that looks into the living room and through to the forests surrounding Hirafu Village – the perfect place to recount stories of the day’s activities.
The chalet comprises three levels with the top floor featuring the five main bedrooms, each with en suite bathroom and individually decorated headboard elements; the second level with an expansive living, kitchen/dining, media room with 70-inch TV, and children’s areas; and the lower level home to utilities – expansive laundry, ski storage and dry room, a side room for helpers or nannies to occupy, and undercover garage to accommodate the 4WD van that comes with the property.
A full-feature kitchen comprised of long stone counters flush against three sides of the kitchen/dining space – more room than you could ever need to cook up culinary delights or have a chef come in and do it all for you. Surrounded on all sides by the kitchen counters is a long wooden dining table that seats all 14 of the lodge’s guests.

The master bedroom is located on the top floor and features grand wall-to-ceiling windows, with an expansive view of the forests beyond Hirafu Village yours to enjoy day and night. Two guests can sleep in either a king double or two single beds here as needs require, and an expansive study desk and storage space make the room useful not just for sleeping. The en suite bathroom features a bath and shower as well as two wash stands and toilet.

The second bedroom is next in grandeur to the master bedroom and is located next door to it on the third floor. The room is equipped with a king bed that can be split into two single beds at your request, and also has a small desk with chair for study purposes. BEDROOM 3
The third bedroom is very similar to the second and it’s also located on the third level. This rooms sleeps two guests in a king bed that can be split into two single beds if needed, and also has a small desk with chair for study or work. The en suite bathroom has a washstand, toilet and shower. Bedroom three faces towards the village and has corner windows taking advantage of these views.

The fourth bedroom is slightly smaller than the first three bedrooms and features either a king double or two single beds according to your needs. Location
SETTING / ATMOSPHERE
Mukashi Mukashi is settled in just the right place if you want to be close to lifts and nightlife. A little down from the main intersection, expect some diners and revellers passing the front of the property in the evenings seeking out the gourmet hot spots on this street. Thankfully Hirafu-Zaka street’s underground heating extends a little down the steep incline below the intersection, saving you from icy sidewalks underfoot.
LIFTS / TRANSPORT
The lifts are a five-minute walk away, with a short walk uphill to the main intersection and then a quick traverse bringing you to the Ace Family Quad lift. There are regular shuttle services passing by Mukashi Mukashi, and the inter-resort shuttle stop is also nearby. If you have your international drivers permit, the property’s management provides a four-wheel-drive vehicle for the duration of your stay during winter, to help you get to where you need to go.
RESTAURANTS / BARS
Mukashi Mukashi shares the block with some of Hirafu’s most beloved nightlife spots. Gyu+ bar (the famous fridge door bar) is a little downhill, while popular downtempo dive bar Moon Bar is a little up the street (and serves very reasonable Japanese Izakaya style food upstairs in the “Otsukisama” restaurant). With your own car, a drive to the supermarket in Kutchan town is always recommended, but you can fill your larder at the local convenience store that is just up the road.

Mukashi Mukashi is an amazing chalet in a great location so you are within walking distance to ski lifts, shops and restaurants. The property is very spacious so this is perfect for a big group of families or friends. Love the design and each of the bedrooms feel comfortable.

Mukashi Mukashi is ultra cool! The word “mukashi” means “ancient” (as far as I know) and it makes complete sense the minute you walk in the day and find a SAMURAI statue greeting you. The juxtaposition of its brutalist, avant-garde exterior and textured antique interior details is just wonderful. Going beyond aesthetics, the villa delivers so much value – a huge kitchen, media room, super stylish living area with gorgeous views outside. Serious wow factor.

Conveniently located within walking distance are various restaurants and izakayas. This modern chalet uniquely combines old Japanese furniture, giving it a distinct charm.
