Millésime is a vogue new chalet which pushes the boundaries of chalet development in Niseko. With a super-contemporary staggered block form as viewed from the outside, the interior is a modern-retro furnished spectacle.
Millésime – for those like us who needed translation – is the French word for vintage. And it certainly is a vintage new product for 2016-2017. But the main reason it’s called Millésime is for the meticulously curated and individually selected Timothy Oulton furniture, artwork and fittings. Oulton was born into an antique family business, and when he took over the reins he repositioned it to reproduce antique-inspired furniture using traditional handcraftsmanship – albeit design to fit in with modern architecture and needs.

This chalet isn’t like anything else in Niseko. Almost all of the chalets and condominiums built in Niseko over the past 10 years are furnished with largely modern furniture and décor. Millésime will appeal to people who are inspired by design and architecture that pushes the boundaries and dares to create something out of the ordinary.
The top building block of the three is the living and dining space – built high and oriented to take in the view of picturesque volcano Mt Yotei through a huge picture frame window almost the entire size of the south facing wall. There is also a powder room on this floor alongside a staircase spiraling to the lower levels.
Two bedrooms occupy the whole of the middle floor, both with ensuite bathrooms. The third bedroom is in the concrete ground floor block, also with ensuite bathroom. Also in the ground floor is a Japanese “genkan” entrance where shoes are removed, before being introduced to the first signs of the Ourton interior in the foyer. There is also ski drying room, laundry and car port on this level.

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE
Millésime is located in a charming little valley just alongside the Hirafu Lower Village, just 500m from the Ace Family Lift. Its secluded setting means it enjoys a pristine natural atmosphere with babbling creek nearby, while enjoying all the amenity and convenience of being in the village. Just a short walk up an undercover flight of stairs takes you to the ring road circling Hirafu, from where you can catch the free village shuttle bus to the lifts or any restaurant or shop in the village.
LIFTS / TRANSPORT
It’s probably a 15-minute walk to the closest lift, and the local village shuttle stop is 1 minute’s uphill walk away. A car port makes parking your own rental car easy, or if you prefer not to drive the property management will provide a shuttle to and from the ski lifts one way each day.
RESTAURANTS / BARS
There are also a dozen or more bars and restaurants within an easy walk, including a rustic little izakaya called Ebisutei, and the world-famous Fridge Door bar – where you have to crouch down to pass through the 1m-high bar fridge door to get inside. So Japanese and so illustrative of the quirky Niseko attraction. Jump on the shuttle bus which runs until last lifts at 9pm and you can access any other restaurant in the village – Hirafu is your oyster!
