Koho Kitchen and Dining Area | Lower Hirafu

Koho was refurbished in 2015, beautifully marrying old and new when the old original Hirafu ski lodge was given a new lease on life in modern Niseko. The owners have kept the original build and worked with the traditional wood beams that criss-cross the house, choosing to fold kitchen and living “nooks” into the recesses between, all the while making clever use of the receding ceilings to create a spacious and airy feeling in an otherwise cozy space.

One side of the living space is taken up by two kitchen nooks opposite each other, with a stylish wooden dining table in between. The kitchen and dining is separated from the living area with a feature fireplace, that faces the living room sofa and additional chairs. The sofa is built into the ceiling recess to create a truly cozy nook, with a coffee table that matches its length. You can lay back and enjoy the 46-inch flat-screen TV with internet TV and SONOS Surround Sound, or simply gaze at the wood-fed fireplace and listen to the crackling of the fire.

Down the stairs there are three bedrooms in total – two bedrooms with full en-suites take up the second floor, while one bunk bedroom with its own TV nook serves as a great kids’ space on the ground floor. Each furniture piece throughout the house has been carefully chosen to match the clean, simple and understated wooden aesthetic.

Koho Chalet is located towards the bottom of the Lower Village in Hirafu, Niseko’s most developed and exciting ski village. This far downhill, Koho offers uninterrupted views of Mt. Yotei and pleasant forest surroundings, with a bit more seclusion away from the hustle and bustle of the main village.

The lifts are a good 10-minute hike uphill, doable but a challenge with all your gear. If you plan to walk and rent your gear, you can look into overnight storage options so you don’t need to truck your gear back and forth all the way. During the season, the local free village shuttle will run past Koho every 20 minutes, with a stop to jump on a short 3-minute walk away. If you choose to rent a car during your stay, there’s space to park on-site.

Hirafu’s Lower Village area is home to quite a few hidden restaurants and izakayas and can be a great place to explore away from the crowds. Have a look at locally owned and loved Ebisutei, Koharuya and Rin Izakayas, hidden amongst the chalets and cottages of the lower village. Yukoro onsen is in the lower village too, as is Niseko Spa – a great place to grab a morning coffee or pamper yourself after a long day on the hill.
