Description
Greystone is a huge old Japanese chalet refurbished to a chic modern standard in an exciting heart-of-the-lower-village location. The house sleeps up to 18 people in 7 bedrooms, making it a great place for large groups or multiple families. Much of the original building’s character has been kept, but refurbished at great expense – dark stained hardwoods and cleverly panelled stone (hence “greystone”) abound making each bathroom and bedroom its own cozy space.
Sleeps: 18 guests (18 max)
Size: 490m² (floorplan)
Built / refurbished: 1980s / 2016

The chalet has actually been converted from one of the original old Hirafu Village pensions – that is, large family run bed and breakfast-style lodge. These places generally have a large common dining and lounge room, and communal men’s and ladies’ bathrooms. The chalet conversion has retained these large open spaces, and made three of the bedrooms large ensuite bedrooms.
The two original communal bathrooms with their large onsen-style baths have also been retained and enhanced with Hinoki-wood walls – a fragrant Japanese cypress timber – a beautiful traditional feature. The wood and stone design is a fusion of modern alpine style with Japanese touches. Dark timber wood posts and beams feature throughout, offset by the pale Hinoki wood in the bathrooms.
Grey stone tiling (as the name suggests) is also prominent throughout the house, with Japanese lantern lights providing a warm glow. There is a full kitchen for those who want to prepare meals in-house, large lounge room and media room.

BEDROOM 5
Great for the kids, this bunk bedroom features 3 bunk beds with room for 6 guests. There is a drawer for some storage space, but luggage may have to be stored elsewhere – not a problem with all the extra rooms and generous shared spaces in Greystone. The nearby TV room with flat-screen TV, DVD player and a selection of children’s DVDs means the kids can enjoy their own programming upstairs while the adults entertain downstairs. Windows look out onto Lower Hirafu village.

BEDROOM 6
Towards the back of the house on the first floor, behind the laundry and living space, the 6th bedroom is great for those wanting a little extra privacy away from the other guests. Located opposite is a separate bath and shower, with feature hinoki wood walls and Greystone’s signature stone finishes. Ample bathroom facilities upstairs mean this bathroom is virtually yours. At the entrance of the room is a separate nook with a sofa, bookshelves and its own flat-screen TV. Windows look out over Lower Hirafu village. An open hall leads to the bedroom itself.

An en suite toilet and shower unit allow for secluded living, and windows look out over the road and Lower Hirafu Village.

Location
SETTING / ATMOSPHERE
Greystone is in a really great location amidst the low-rise accommodation precinct of the lower village. This is a little quieter than the upper/middle village and bordered by pristine snowbound forest, giving it a beautiful, natural Hokkaido mountain village feel.
LIFTS / TRANSPORT
It’s about a 10-15 minute walk up to the lifts from here, or maybe a little longer in ski boots or with kids – in fact it might be a tough walk unless you’re a really tough kinda guy or gal! Luckily management offers a dedicated car and driver service every morning. They’ll get half your group to the lifts and the other half to town for some shopping. On your way back, catch the free shuttle bus which stops right across the road.
RESTAURANTS / BARS
Greystone is within five minute’s walk of a dozen of the most popular local restaurants and bars hidden in Lower Hirafu. We’re talking Izakayas Rin and Ebisutei, as well as the Fridge Door Bar and more. Haven’s new on-site cafe brings some coffee options for the Lower Village too – less than 10 minutes’ walk away.

Sara –
A really cool lodge that was renovated to be a super cool chalet with plenty of room to sleep an entourage. Location wise it’s perfect for walking to the free shuttle or up to restaurants and shops in the local Hirafu Village. Highly recommend the chalet for the perfect family getaway.
