The estate was the pet project of one of Niseko’s most prominent architects, Riccardo Tossani, who also designed the main street redevelopment and many houses and buildings in the area. Tossani owns one of the houses himself, and paid incredible attention to detail in their design. The framed view out the main living area window is one of the nicest things about staying here, especially at night when lights shining outside the windows illuminate the falling snowflakes.

There are two slightly different chalet types, but they are both set over two stories. After stepping in the front door you step into a spacious “genkan” entrance on a split middle level where you remove your shoes. From here you step up a short flight of stairs into the main living area, or downstairs to the sleeping quarters.

The furniture and fittings are tasteful and high quality. High ceilings amplify the feeling of space and the alpine atmosphere and a gas fireplace in the lounge completes this picture. There is a full kitchen with ample facilities for cooking a great meal in, if you’re not too busy eating out. An island bench separates the kitchen from the dining area, and offers the opportunity to eat light meals or have a drink while talking with the chef. A dishwasher can take care of the washing up.

Forest Estate
Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

Forest Estate sits on the border between Middle and Lower Hirafu. This affords you easy access to all that’s cool and exciting in the village, while still maintaining privacy as well as providing direct views of Mount Yotei. Hard to beat that!

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

The lifts are about 15-20 minute walk away, or just 5-10 minutes on the free shuttle bus. This makes reaching the slopes easy with your ski gear and you can also reach Hirafu’s restaurants with ease.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

There are several restaurants and bars within walking distance, and so is Momiji Zaka Street – the village’s unofficial entertainment street. Nearby standouts include French restaurant The Barn, yakitori restaurant Yosaku, jazz bar Half Note and smokey late night drinking den Barunba.

Great property with easy access to the shuttle and Middle Hirafu. Comfy property and an ideal base for a holiday in Niseko.

5 minutes walk from main hirafu shops. Uphill for the ski lifts but that’s true for most places . Spacious rooms, clean space and cosy lounge.

Forest Estate 4 was a very comfortable 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. Very clean. Large living/kitchen room with superb views of Mt Yotei.

Laundry and drying room were perfect for a family of 5. Instructions for equipment were clear.

If I had one small observation I would have expected a TV with USB port. But that’s a very minor detail. WiFi was fine for the family.

Powderlife reps were excellent especially when we had a medical emergency.

I’ll try and book the place again this year when I know my dates.

NLV has a few apartments called “Forest Estate” which are not at the main NLV hotel location (Do not be confused). The main NLV is about a 3mins drive or 10mins walk from Forest Estate apartments.
I went during winter and stayed in a 2 storey, 3 bedroom apartment c/w a large living room, fireplace, balcony, kitchen, dining area and a view of Mt Yotei (on clear days only) from the living room. I’ve to say, its the best foreign apartments i’ve stayed in my travels. Very spacious and comfortable and suitable to even stay there for a month cos its like living in your own house. I slept very well on both nights as the beds were very comfy with working heaters in the rooms. The view next morning in the living room was amazing while it was still snowing outside, very surreal.
Location – 15 – 20 mins walk to the ski area, much further than the main NLV. There’s a bus stop near forest estate and a free shuttle comes every 20mins that takes you to the ski area. Many restaurants around with a big convenience store (Seiko Mart). Its much more secluded than the main NLV but I like it as its much quieter and peaceful without so many tourists.
The apartment even has a toboggan and we played with it in the morning as there’s a slope just outside the apartment (the slide down isn’t exactly very smooth like what you see on tv as we had to smoothen the slope ourselves but fun nevertheless)
Service: Staffs are proficient in both English and Japanese. They are probably here to ski and work at the same time, hence service is not 5star hotel standard but they are very friendly and helpful. They provide transport down to our Forest Estate apartments when we check in and back to NLV when we check out.
If you are travelling in groups of 5 and above, I strongly recommend this Forest Estate Apartments, even more if you are staying for a lot of nights.
