Owashi Lodge was originally built in 1992 as staff accommodation for one of Hirafu’s old hotels. These days the building shows its age, but since 2010 it’s found a new lease on life and is bringing mountains of enjoyment to a new wave of Niseko skier – foreigners on a budget!
There’s nothing fancy about Owashi Lodge, but if you’ve read this far you don’t need fancy do you? It’s clean, it’s just minutes walk from one of the main ski runs, and is run by awesome, friendly Japanese staff. It’s got basic rooms, shared bathrooms, communal kitchens, coin washing machine and driers, a spacious dry room with ski storage and tuning facilities, and communal entertainment areas – including one of Niseko’s best bars in house. Booya!
All the bedrooms are private or shared bunk rooms, with one three-bunk dorm room. There are no en suite rooms, but there are separate male and female shared bathrooms on each floor (cleaned daily, with individual lockable shower-and-bath units and communal changing space.) The communal kitchens are big and well equipped with solid cooking equipment. They’re also a great place to have a chat to fellow travellers and pick up some tips on where you might find some great skiing and snowboarding the next day.

Location
Setting / Atmosphere
Owashi Lodge is located at the very top of Hirafu Upper Village amongst a few other old and new hotels and condominiums. You could say it’s just above the heart of the village, meaning you’re out of the hustle and bustle but still close to all the action.
Lifts / Transport
Proximity to the lifts doesn’t get any better, unless you’re paying 10 times as much for ski-in/ski-out. It’s about a five-minute clomp up to the family run and Ace Quad lift – one of the main feeder lifts to the upper mountain. The free village loop shuttle bus stops just outside the front door.
Restaurants / Bars
Just a short stroll down the hill and you’ll feel like a kid in a candy store trying to choose which restaurant or bar you’re going to head into. There’s plenty of great budget options to try so be sure to make it out for a few meals – it’s some of the best eating and best value eating around!!

It was a nice place to stay in Niseko.
The staff were friendly, and the environment of Owashi Lodge was comfortable. In addition, the room was much bigger than our expectations!
Also, the location of the hotel was close to the ski field and the bus station. There were many restaurants and bars around the hotel.
I would highly recommend Owashi Lodge to live in Niseko, and I will be back if I have the next chance.

Cheap and cheerful and so close to the lifts and bus terminal!

Great location and friendly and helpful staff! I stayed for 2 nights at Owashi Lodge for a ski trip to Niseko. The staff really went the extra mile with answering my transportation questions. The room was clean and had no issues with noise. Overall, a convenient and great budget place to stay!
Tania (NZ) –
Recently our extended family of six spent 3 nights at Owashi Lodge. It was a fabulous base from which to ski. The staff were very helpful and accommodating and the Lodge facilities (e.g., kitchen, laundry and dining room) provided us with the flexibility we needed when traveling. We will definitely stay at Owashi Lodge again.

The perfect budget lodge. Owashi Lodge is about as close to the lifts and also shops as you can get! An easy walk to the Ace Chair, ski hire, restaurants and pharmacy. The staff are lovely and very helpful, they picked us up and dropped us off at the Welcome Centre on the day of our arrival and departure. Guests are friendly and respectful – much more low-key than most similar hostels. Highly recommend!

Friendly, comfortable & convenient
I was absolutely delighted with my stay at Owashi Lodge. The staff was kind, friendly and accommodating. The bunk beds were the quietest bunk beds I’ve ever experienced, which is very important in a hostel. The bartender was helpful and funny. The kitchen is awesome!
I know there were party people there, but it’s set up in a way that the noisy crazy is in the basement and not going to bother people who want to sleep early. The view from the lounge in the morning is gorgeous .
You’re a three minute walk up the hill to the nearest lift. There’s a lovely yoga studio less than a ten minute walk away. There are a ton of excellent bars and restaurants nearby.
I would highly recommend Owashi Lodge to anyone, and I’ll definitely be back.
