Niseko J-Sekka

J-Sekka was previously an old hotel called J-Second, the younger brother of the now demolished J-First Hotel which was just up the road. Both were built in Hirafu’s previous heyday in the 1980s. Shouya Grigg, a long-time Hokkaido-based expat designer, photographer and developer, completely stripped the the J-Second hotel, took out some walls, and transformed it into a smaller number of larger suites, rather than hotel rooms. There was also space for many onsite rooms to be converted for other purposes, including two large restaurant spaces, a lounge bar, a retail wine cellar, massage rooms and now even a small gym. All created in Shouya’s signature “Sekka” brand of stylish design.

The 1 and 2-bedroom apartments have full kitchens with cooktops, ovens, and dishwasher, as well as Nespresso coffee makers. The studio apartments have cooktops, a microwave, and a smaller fridge. All apartments come with laundries with washing machines and dryers

J-Sekka Suites can sleep up to 28 people in nine rooms, in studio, 1-bedroom and 2-bedrooms suites. The 1-bedroom apartments in particular are very spacious and all rooms are large and well equipped with all mod cons you could ask for. Most of the rooms have split beds that can be made up as two singles or a king size double. However there are two rooms that only have queen size doubles that can’t be separated. Be sure to check which you are booking to avoid an awkward realisation when you rock up with your buddy!

Please note the bedrooms in the 2-bed apartments (E&F) are a little tight and the king bed configuration rather than the twin single will give most room.

Also the bedroom of one of the 1-bedroom apartments (D1) doesn’t have enough space for twin beds, therefore a fixed king-size bed is the only option.

J-Sekka Suites
Location

SETTING / ATMOSPHERE

J-Sekka Suites could best be described as virtually ski-in/ski-out but without the price tag. It is also located right on the corner of the two main streets of Hirafu Village, so that shopping, restaurants, and everything you need is within easy reach.

LIFTS / TRANSPORT

You’re just 100m from the ski slope but don’t pay the premium price that absolute SI/SO attracts. If you want to get straight to the upper lifts, you can jump on the free village shuttle bus which stops across the road. It will whisk you 500m up the road and straight to the Ace Quad, or stay on until the next stop at the Hirafu Gondola.

RESTAURANTS / BARS

The hotel is on the crossroads of Hirafu’s two main streets which mark the centre of the village. There are restaurants or cafes on three of the four corners of the intersection, the Seicomart convenience store is just nearby as well as Explore Niseko activity booking centre. The main rental shop Rhythm is just above the crossroads, and within five minutes walk is probably 20-plus restaurants and a dozen bars.

We loved our stay at J-sekka. The location is amazing, so central to everything and so many good restaurant and bars nearby. We loved Micks wine bar just below! It is right in the middle of Hirafu and its so quick to get to the ski lift or walk through upper and lower Hirafu. Our room was perfect for a couple and the staff.were very friendly and helpful. The room had large shower and bath, separate toilet and a laundry area which was great. We didn’t cook much as there are so many good restaurants in the area but the kitchen was well set up. Would stay here again unless we needed a bigger place next time.

J-Sekka is the best run hotel in the Niseko area. It is close to all activities including skiiing. The management and its staff are more than happy to accommodate and anticipate their guests’ wishes. Nothing is out of reach. The staff speaks impeccable English. The rooms are fully equipped for families and couples alike. This is not only a boutique hotel, but one which is the admiration of chain branded hotels. A visit to Niseko would be amiss without a stay at this boutique hotel. The view from the rooms of the surrounding mountains is simply breathtaking and spectacular. It is a backdrop reminiscent of films. Quintessentially the best hotel in Niseko by far. Again, it’s not only the view, and accommodation but their staff that is eager to please that sets it apart from the rest. A stay here would not go amiss.

J Sekka is not ski in, ski out… but this is literally the best location you could ask for. Well appointed accommodations, right above a Pizza restaurant, next to a massage place, a few bars, and more. Just a short walk to the slopes and Rhythm for all of your other needs. Staff was also very helpful, no complaints and would definitely book again.

So much room for 2 people! Booked a 1 bedroom apartment, but would do a study next time. Beautifully appointed. Great location (not quite ski in ski out, but you pay for that!) Easy walk to the chair lift. Pizza restaurant downstair, and lovely cafe next door with plenty of other food options within easy walk.
Huge kitchen, lounge and dining area in apartment. Separate toilet which is always a plus! Big bath and shower in wet room. Laundry area to wash clothes handy.
    Definitely would stay again!
