THIS wetlands area is one of Hokkaido’s most unknown and stunning nature sights.
The Uryu Swamp was recognized as the world’s first mountainous wetlands area by the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance – called the Ramsar Convention – on November 8, 2005.
Uryunuma-shitsugen extends across four kilometres east to west and two kilometers north to south on a plateau at a height of 850m. From the boardwalks you can view the more than 100 alpine ponds, which dot
the landscape of the swamp.
The wetlands are located in the Shokanbetsu Teuri Yagishiri Quasi-National Park.
