Snow bugs are back

By 24th October 2011August 27th, 2013

If you have been riding your bike in Niseko recently, you may have swallowed some “yukimushi” or “snow bugs”. It is an old Japanese tale, but Hokkaido locals swear they can tell when snow is going to fall by the presence of yukimushi. There have been flurries of those tiny white bugs that look like snow flakes, hovering in the air around Lake Hangetsu at the foot of Mt. Yotei. Legend has it that once they start coming out in full, snow will fall within two weeks.
The first snow in Niseko fell on October 1st, but it only dusted the top of Mt. Yotei for a few days. If the legend is true we should be getting our snow boots out pretty soon.
