IN a bitter blow to powder hounds eager to get on the slopes, Hirafu’s official opening date of the 2010/2011 season has been postponed due to a lack of snow.
To residents in the village this doesn’t come as much of a surprise, however it’s still a disappointment. As can be seen, the lower half of the mountain is quite bare and very green.
Today was a beautiful day outside, warm sunshine and bright blue skies, which sadly is opposite to the weather that we need to get the resort open.
The official notice from Hirafu doesn’t give a concrete date on when the lifts will start whisking customers up the hill, only that it will depend on when there is sufficient snow. If there is sudden and significant snowfalls, maybe Sunday the 21st of November. Failing that, maybe the public holiday on the 23rd or maybe as late as the 27th of this month.
While this is unfortunate news, locals aren’t worried. We know that it doesn’t take long for the mountain to accrue snow and it’s inevitable that it will. Last year was slow to start, but we all remember how big a season it ended up being.
Everybody, think snow!
