Niseko Town To Implement 2% Bed Tax In Line With Kutchan Town

NISEKO NEWS

Niseko Town is planning to impose a 2% accommodation tax, the Hokkaido Shinbun newspaper reports.

The plan is under discussion at the town council and should be implemented during the Japanese fiscal year 2023.

The 2% rate is modelled on the system that was implemented and has been in place in Kutchan Town since November 2019.

The town estimates the tax income will generate ¥200 million (approx USD$1.5) annually – about 4% of Niseko Town’s annual budget for fiscal 2023.

Tax raised will go towards local transport, natural disaster prevention, and reducing the environmental impacts of tourism.

The Kutchan accommodation tax was the first of its kind in Hokkaido.

Niseko Town had considered implementing its tax earlier but postponed the move through COVID.
