LAWSON is the second biggest convenience store (konbini) chain in Japan, but Hirafu’s Lawson is run by local small businessman, Seiji Ichien, and managed by his son Hiroyuki (pictured).
The Ichiens have run a liquor shop in Kutchan for four generations (and still deliver liquor to local bars and restaurants).
Because they had a liquor license, it was easy for them to make it a convenience store when they became popular in the 1990s.
When Lawson decided they wanted to open a franchise in a ski resort, they asked Ichien-san to do it in Hirafu.
He’s done a great job stocking a range of foreign products for international visitors.
二年前、コンビニが一つしかなかった比羅夫地区に、ローソンを観光地に広めようという試みで、店長の一圓寛之さんが倶知安町でのローソン経営の経験を認められ、オープンしました。父でありオーナーの精司さんが、一圓商店として倶知安町で代々酒屋を経営されており、酒屋として今でもニセコにあるＢａｒやレストランに配達もしているという。 冬のシーズンには、50％の顧客が外国人で占められることから、海外からの観光客の要望に答え、外国人向け品揃えコーナー、地元のものなど他店では見られない工夫を凝らしている。日本の顔となるような接客、清潔さ、フレンドリーさとオリジナリティーのあるお店を心がけています。冬のイベント情報があれば、どんどん回覧板に貼り付けます。一息つけるお店、社公の場になったらいいなと話す寛之さんでした。
