Kurodake skiers, boarders rescued safely

ALL six foreign Niseko skiers and snowboarders who were stranded on Mt Kurodake have been found safe and well after spending the night in a snow cave.

A 50-person search and rescue party set off early this morning and the missing people were located and brought down the mountain by about 6.30am.

The six were part of a larger group of 11 that hiked to the peak of 1984m Mt Kurodake, one of the highest peaks of the Daisetsuzan Mountain Range.

Five made it back to the base of the mountain however six became separated on the descent and were not able to make it back before dark.

A helicopter located the stranded hikers late in the afternoon but was unable to make a rescue, and attempts were put on hold until this morning.

The group that spent the night on the mountain included one each from Australia, Holland, Britain and America and two New Zealanders.
