Chop up your lift pass – heli is the new gondola

By 18th February 2014June 28th, 2014Niseko News, Niseko Snow Report

Heli-skiing has come to Niseko and Powderlife was lucky enough to be on one of the first flights to drop skiers and snowboarders onto a powder-covered Hokkaido mountain peak on the weekend.

Shiribetsu-dake, alongside nearby Rusutsu resort, is the first drop zone of what the Hokkaido Backcountry Club hopes will become a network of heli-accessed local peaks.

Powderlife.com’s snow reporter MikePow was lucky enough to take part in the experience, dropping off the summit of Shirebetsu-dake and skiing its steep gullies and tree runs down to the town of Kimobetsu.

Pow will give us a full rundown on his experience and the start of heli-skiing in Niseko for a feature article in the 2015 winter edition of Powderlife magazine.

If you can’t wait that long, the bird will be flying until the end of March for this winter season, and Mike assures us it’s a must do if you want a day in Hokkaido you’ll never forget.

Many thanks to Clayton, Jordy, Pablo, pilot Iwada-san and all others involved for having us and also making this a reality.

For more information please visit the Hokkaido Backcountry Club website and look out for the feature article in next season’s Powderlife, in hardcopy in the resort and other selected locations, and available to download free on iTunes.
