Niseko Skiing
Welcome to the first step towards your Niseko ski adventure! Niseko is a great place to ski for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers, thanks to almost daily top ups of powder snow. The super-soft, pillowy powder that covers the mountains of Niseko literally provides the ultimate skiing conditions for all three. Averaged across the peak season, you could expect three out of five mornings to have a 2-20cm fresh blanket of powder in the morning. For the advanced skiers, high on the mountain, this means 20-30cm of fresh overnight, and a few days a year we get 40cm+ overnight. Cumulative snowfalls in Niseko average about 12m and have totaled up to 16m in a season.
Beginner skiers
For beginner skiers, this constant powder top up means the slopes are very soft and cushioned, so the inevitable falls while skiing in niseko are generally forgiving, as opposed to the punishing like you’ll find on the rock-hard icy bases in many other ski resorts around the world. Some people pick up skiing fairly naturally, but others will need a few lessons. There are a number of Niseko ski schools you can choose from.
Intermediate and advanced skiing
For people who have been skiing before, but haven’t experienced deep powder, you’re in for the experience of a lifetime. There’s nothing quite like floating up to your waist through Niseko’s light, fluffy powder. If you come Skiing in Niseko during the powder season for a week or 10 days, at the very least you can expect several boot-deep days. If you’re lucky you could quite literally score boot to waist deep every day! If you venture off the beaten tracks a little bit, it’s virtually guaranteed. Between Niseko and a half dozen resorts within 30 minutes drive, you have so many options you literally won’t believe it until you see it. But if you do plan to ski Niseko's off-piste, be sure to check all the local avalanche reports and if you really don’t know about avalanches, hire a mountain guide or go on a backcountry tour. The snow might seem friendly but it can turn on you in an instant.
Niseko Skiing Equipment
To ski Niseko powder snow effectively, we recommend intermediate and advanced skiers buy or hire powder skis. Powder skis are fatter (wider) than regular skis, so the extra surface area gives them more float in the powder. There are a number of Niseko ski hire shops specialising in powder skis and all the other stuff you’ll need to help you get deep.
