Kutchan Potato Festival @ Kutchan Aug 4-5

Niseko Footpath Festival
The idea of creating footpaths was born in Britain; however, the concept has been applied very successfully here in Hokkaido. Dozens of different groups have created new footpaths, trying to establish a large network of interconnected paths all over Hokkaido. In response to this development, the Hokkaido Footpath Network has been founded.
Niseko receives many visitors all year-round and Niseko’s footpaths are a great way to make the beauty of Niseko accessible to those travelling on foot.
For the Niseko Footpath festival, we have invited Mr. Hiroyuki Ishi to give a keynote speech, as well as the heads of the surrounding towns and villages that have been responsible for creating footpaths. Together they will celebrate the beauty of our natural surroundings, but also think about ways of connecting the various footpaths in Hokkaido and map out the future of footpaths in our area. -

Start of a new residency management system. 9 July 2012
What exactly is the new residency management system?
The aim of the new residency management system is to enable the Ministry of Justice to continuously keep information necessary for managing the residency of foreign nationals residing in Japan for the mid-to long-term with resident status, and ensure greater convenience for those foreign nationals.
The system will issue qualifying foreign nationals a resident card containing a portrait photo of the individual, basic personal information such as his/her name, his/her resident status and his/her currently allowed period of stay.
Moreover, because the new system will allow authorities to more accurately track resident status than with the previous system, it makes it possible to introduce measures that will improve the convenience of foreign nationals who legally reside in Japan, such as a maximum period of stay of five years instead of the previous three years, and a new reentry permit system that waives reentry per -

The Niseko HANAZONO Hill Climb Executive Committee is holding a follow-up event to the 3rd Niseko HANAZONO Hill Climb: the ‘Morning ride around Mt.Yotei & lunch’. New ski centre Open!! Novmber 2012@Grand Hirafu Ski Resort
A new ski centre will open in November 2012 out the front of the Hotel Niseko Alpen (originally the location of the lift ticket office at the lower part of the Ace course).
The first floor will have a ski school & information counter, as well as a rental desk to cover last year’s Kougen & Ace rental stores.
The second floor will feature great views and will be centered around a spacious resting area (110 seats), accompanied by a café offering a stylish place to enjoy a tea or coffee. The facility will also offer a roof-top terrace for relaxing with friends and family while taking in the view of Mt Yotei (summer only).
In the case of an emergency, the facility will be prepared with an aid/relief room, and for those day-trip visitors there will be lockers as well as change rooms. -

NAC Big Swim in Toya 29 July (Sun)
This year marks the 12th ‘NAC Big Swim in Toya’, one of the few outdoor swimming competitions held in Hokkaido.
Lake Toya is a popular destination for swimmers, due to its clear water, gentle waves, and a water temperature that is relatively high for Hokkaido (19 degrees during the tournament in 2011).
The aim of the ‘Big Swim’ is to create a relaxed competition in which anyone can take part, and be able to enjoy a magnificent open swim quite unlike anything that can be experienced in an indoor pool.
A ‘Kids Aquathon’ for elementary school children will be held at the same time as the 1500m and 800m events.

NAC Trail Run in Niseko: Apply now! September 9 (Sun)
Come run through the lush scenery of Niseko! Experience the mountainous terrain of Niseko Annupuri, situated at the far eastern end of the Niseko mountain range running behind the NAC Centre. We will run a 30km course, ascending and descending 1000m along the off-road trail, including an ascent to the summit. Make your way through Hokkaido’s countryside, enjoying views of Iwaonupuri and Chisenupuri, and panoramas of the Sea of Japan, Mt. Yotei, and Lake Toya.
