The Japanese people are among the friendliest and most polite in the world. They can seem a little shy but will return any greeting with a heartfelt reply and beaming smile.

Meet the Locals is a section we run in Powderlife every issue where we have a short Q and A with a Niseko local working in the ski resort to let you know a little more about the people you are meeting everyday – on the lifts, at the ticket windows and in the on-mountain restaurants and cafes.

Be sure to practice your greetings and pleasantries – to get you started try konichiwa (hello), ohayo gozaimasu (good morning) and arigato (thank you). Be sure to check our glossary for more words and phrases that will make your Niseko experience so much better.
