Hokkaido is one of the world’s great undiscovered tourist treasures. As global warming increasingly impacts on popular tourist destinations around the globe, Hokkaido is just starting to come into its own.
The powder snow that blankets the ski resorts in winter is one legacy of its location off the coast of Siberia, but in addition, it is just far enough north of the equator to escape the humidity which makes mainland Japan quite hot in summer. In short, it is the ideal all-year round holiday destination.
As more foreign ski visitors come to feel comfortable with Niseko, they might think about spreading their wings and taking in the best of the rest of this magic island –
‘The Garden of The Gods’.
Shiretoko Peninsula is one of the most remote and spectacularly rugged places in Japan. A high mountainous spine rears up from a narrow coastal plain characterised by weathered basalt cliffs over which numerous rivers and hot spring waterfalls tumble down into an aqua ocean.
Hokkaido is home to approximately 25,000 thoroughbred horses, with around 7000 new foals born each year. They arrive from mid-January through till early spring, entering a cold, white world some say starts the toughening up process making them racing ’machines’.
Anywhere outside Japan these days, mention the word Hokkaido, and images of powder snow immediately leap to mind. Mention Hokkaido to a Japanese, however, and the image has always been of food. Particularly seafood and dairy products..
Spring, summer and autumn offers a very exciting range of leisure possibilities for holidaymakers looking for a vacation with a difference. Niseko adventure businesses are reporting annual growth in the summer visitor market of more than 15%.
The ocean off nearby Shakotan Peninsula has been designated the only marine park in all of Hokkaido. Its special feature is the crystal clarity of the Japan Sea there, to be enjoyed from every point on the road or from glass-bottomed boats.

Rumor has it that the surf in Hokkaido can get really, really good during the annual typhoon season. With so little documented, however, the hard part is knowing where to look. While Japan is largely an unchartered surfing destination, Hokkaido is truly a surfing frontier.
The last real remaining habitat of the Red Crested Crane is in the Kushiro Wetlands National Park, a wide expanse of beautiful, but boggy, marshes just north of the pretty port town of Kushiro, on the south-east coast of Hokkaido.
Many a skier or snowboarder has gazed longingly at the peak of Mt Yotei and dreamed of climbing to the summit, with the reward of enjoying a half hour descent through untracked powder.
