Traditionally, there was much more animosity that existed between skiers and boarders. These days, the two 'races' live in harmony... of sorts. Although, we do still live in a world far from a utopia, where we all know there is still often a deep-seeded, underlying conflict between the two breeds of snow creatures
IT’S the eternal battle. To ski or to board? That is the question.
For decades now it’s been heatedly argued out in bars après ski...or should that be après board?
Earning your avalanche stripes - Powderlife recently went on a weekend recreational avalanche safety course and we share what we've learned
Scott Bowman and Nick Gutry run Niseko Snowmobiling Adventures, and have more than two decades of experience in the wilds of the local area alone.
It’s interesting to think what might happen when the skiing world starts to realise there are more than 100 ski resorts across the length and breadth of this wild, volcanic island.

Most Niseko visitors have heard of or dined at the Gentem Café, or as it’s commonly known, the ‘Mongolian Tent’. What most people don’t know is the café is an offshoot business of Gentemstick – the most innovative and, many would say, best snowboards in the world.
For those unfamiliar with the mountains, it’s hard to believe such light, fluffy snow can be so deadly. Niseko follows the lead of resorts across Europe, the US and the southern hemisphere by allowing backcountry access through specific gated points on the ski area boundary.
The first day of the New Year brought with it a foot of powder. And it didn’t stop there. Back to back storms raged throughout the month. A couple of visiting pro skiers arrived on January 5 and stayed for three weeks. They rated it hands down the best powder trip of their lives.
One of Japan’s most spectacularly beautiful and admired landscapes is just an hour’s drive from Niseko on the far side of Mt Yotei – Lake Toya, one of the nation’s favourite onsen resorts. But belying this exquisitely beautiful, serene setting is a fiery alter ego.
Every resort has its crew who call it home. A finite posse whose skiing and riding style reflects that of their home mountain. Japan is emerging as a breeding ground for many top skiers and boarders. Here we introduce Niseko’s local heroes.
