Japan's biggest and most famous annual snow festival takes over the centre of Sapporo at the beginning of February every year. Oh, and don't bring food – there are plenty of street stalls to sample.

Skybus runs day tours from Niseko for those who want a day off the slopes. For more details go to www.Skybus.co.jp.

Niseko Winter Music Festival

Australian Chamber Orchestra artistic director Richard Tognetti fell in love with Niseko after his first visit six years ago. So he found an innovative way to ensure he had to come back every year – by founding the Niseko Winter Music Festival. And we're glad he did! This year they're back for their fourth year.
