Keep in mind that the ski hill isn’t open yet when I tell you the highlight of my week was shopping at Kutchan’s new Daiso store on opening night.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this Japanese retail giant, Daiso is a chain of ¥100 shops that sells everything from laundry hampers to wasabi peas. Unlike $1 shops in my native Australia where you would be hard pressed to find anything under $4, items in Daiso are pretty much ¥100 across the board. My purchases included a pair of glittery, polka-dotted socks, a Santa hat, and some ‘peach cocktail’ hand soap.

Perfect timing for the festive season!

¥100 shops are perfect for visitors who have forgotten any little essentials, or tourists wanting to pick up adorable or quirky gifts for those at home. There are two other ¥100 shops in Kutchan, but something about the pink Daiso sign just makes me feel like all my dreams are about to come true!

Just 15 minutes from Hirafu by bus, Kutchan is also home to a great variety of restaurants, two big supermarkets, and a few international ATMs.

Check out Daiso next to the Max Valu supermarket if you get the chance, I dare you to leave without buying anything!

It'll make you jump for joy as well!
