6 things you can do on a bluebird that you can’t do on a powder day

By 26th February 2014March 22nd, 2021

If you’re visiting powder heaven this week you might be a little disgruntled by the lack of snow and abundance of sunshine, but don’t be a hater! There are opportunities to be seized that Niseko’s usually gloomy skies prevent, and I have gathered just a few of them here for your enjoyment.

Get your dark lens and pack a chu-hi in your hoodie, because it’s time to make the most of the sunshine.

Mt Yotei Niseko bluebird day

1. See Mt Yotei
On a day like today when this semi-dormant volcano looms on the horizon, commanding your notice, it is hard to imagine the landscape without it. But Yotei only presents itself in its entirety on a clear day, so grab your camera and get snapping while it holds still.

Apres in the sunshine Niseko!

2. Après in the sunshine
There’s something very festive about sitting outside with the sun on your face while you chug down a hard earned beverage. The bright snow and the fresh breeze will make you feel like a million bucks, and the feeling will only get better with each beer.

3. Hike the peak
Although it’s true that this can also be done on the occasional pow day, the views and the conditions when there’s blue skies overhead can not be beaten. Instead of slogging it up hill and then huddling away from the wind, you’ll be cavorting around on top of the world.

Goggle tanning!

4. Goggle tanning
There are already some beautiful goggle tans around town, and I know some people aspire to them. They can be found on rooftops and balconies around town, with their faces surreptitiously turned towards the sun.

Niseko Grand Hirafu Terrain Park

5. Lap the park without feeling guilty
Not a big one for me, but for those who would always secretly rather be riding park (weirdos), days like this are like Christmas. It’s warm enough to sit around and watch each other, and it’s perfect light for capturing a picture of yourself doing something awesome so you can put it on Facebook.

Riding in a t-shirt

6. Ride in a t-shirt
The wind rushing over your bare arms will make you feel like a naughty kid out of school uniform, and the sensation of riding without a heavy jacket is really liberating! Just be careful not to fall over too much – ice burn stings no matter how sunny it is.

The sun is meant to stick around for at least another day, so don’t worry if you’ve been blind to this golden opportunity! We’ll save you a deck chair.
